Sciatica Treatment in Beverly, MA

Healthcare services imagePain that travels from your lower back or buttock into your leg can make sitting, driving or sleeping difficult. Tingling or numbness may leave you wondering whether the problem starts in your back, hip or elsewhere.

At North Beverly Chiropractic, we evaluate these symptoms and help determine whether conservative chiropractic care is appropriate. Dr. Kevin Greene develops your plan around the examination findings, your medical history and the activities you want to return to.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica describes symptoms associated with irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve or the nerve roots that contribute to it. It often involves pain traveling into one leg, sometimes with tingling, numbness or weakness. Back pain may occur as well, but back pain alone does not establish a diagnosis of sciatica.

    Why the Evaluation Matters

Several conditions can produce leg pain. Disc problems or narrowing around spinal nerves may contribute to sciatica, while other back, hip, or muscle problems can cause symptoms that resemble it. We evaluate the pattern of your symptoms and your examination findings rather than assume every painful leg has the same cause. Tell us where the pain travels, what makes it better or worse, and whether you have noticed changes in sensation or strength. Information about previous episodes, injuries, and medical conditions also helps guide the evaluation.

      Your First Visit

Your assessment may include lower back and hip movement, orthopedic tests, and checks of strength, reflexes, and sensation. We explain the findings and discuss whether chiropractic treatment, further testing, or referral is the most appropriate next step. Imaging is not automatic. X-rays show bones and alignment but do not directly show most disc or nerve problems. If your symptoms or findings warrant it, we may recommend medical evaluation or additional imaging such as an MRI.

        Personalized Conservative Care

When suitable, your plan may include chiropractic adjustments alongside individualized exercise and guidance on daily activities. We select techniques based on your comfort, diagnosis, and response to treatment. Rehabilitation may focus on tolerable movement, strength, and gradually rebuilding your capacity for activities such as sitting, walking or lifting. We reassess pain and function over time and change the plan when needed. Persistent or worsening symptoms may require another type of care. 🚨 When to Seek Emergency Care:
        • Go to an emergency department immediately for new loss of bladder or bowel control, difficulty urinating, numbness around the groin or saddle area, or severe or worsening weakness in both legs. These symptoms can signal a serious spinal problem.
        • New or progressive weakness in one leg also requires prompt medical assessment.

        Frequently Asked Questions

Is all pain down the leg sciatica?

No. Leg pain can have several causes. An examination helps distinguish nerve related symptoms from other problems and identify when further evaluation is needed.

        Can chiropractic care help?

It may be part of conservative care for appropriately selected patients. Suitability depends on the cause of your symptoms and your examination. We combine any recommended hands-on treatment with an individualized plan for movement and exercise.

        How long will recovery take?

There is no single timeline. Your underlying condition, symptom severity and response to care all matter. We discuss expectations after the evaluation and reassess if you are not progressing.

        Will SoftWave treat my sciatica?

SoftWave is not a routine treatment for a compressed spinal nerve. If a separate tendon or soft tissue problem is contributing to your pain, we can discuss whether SoftWave is appropriate for that condition.
